Dominican passport: how to get and renew it in the United States

Dominican Passport En
Without a current cédula and a birth certificate issued from 2014 onwards there is no passport. Check before booking.

The Dominican passport is handled at the consulate, one of the few big procedures that really does go through a counter. The booklet is biometric and valid for six years.

What sinks most applications is not some obscure requirement. It is the birth certificate, so it is worth reading the next section before booking.

The birth certificate decides everything

You need a birth certificate legalized or barcoded and issued in the Dominican Republic from 2014 onwards. Certificates older than that do not work as they are: they have to be reissued.

A certificate issued by a Central Electoral Board office in the United States also works, and there are several around the country, which saves a trip to the island.

What to bring
  • Current cédula de identidad y electoral
  • Birth certificate issued from 2014, or from a JCE office in the US
  • For a minor, a parent or guardian with their own cédula
  • Any name change already showing on the cédula

Minors

A child has to be accompanied by at least one parent, the legal guardian or an adult holding a power of attorney for the purpose, and that adult presents their own current cédula.

Naturalized citizens

Anyone naturalized Dominican presents the transcript of the record and the naturalization certificate, along with the cédula. If at least one parent is Dominican by birth, the naturalization certificate is not needed.

The married name

To add or remove a married surname, the change has to be on the cédula first. The passport follows the cédula, never the other way round, and turning up with an out-of-date cédula gets the application rejected.

Errors in the booklet

If the booklet carries wrong details or omissions, it does not get corrected: a new one is issued. The one exception is trouble with the letter ñ, which has its own procedure.

Where to do it

At any of the twelve consulates general and at several annex offices, though not all of them issue passports. Call ahead if you are heading to a small office.
