Powers of attorney at the Dominican consulate

The Dominican consul acts as a public notary, which makes the consulate the place to sign a power of attorney so someone can act for you in the Dominican Republic.
How a power of attorney works
The person signing is the poderdante; the person receiving the authority is the apoderado. The consulate drafts the notarial act and signs it, and with it your representative can handle business on the island as if you were there.

What they are mostly used for
Selling or buying property, collecting an inheritance, being represented in court, managing a bank account, accepting custody of a minor, or collecting documents. Each purpose has its own template.
- Your Dominican cédula or passport
- Your representative’s full name as it appears on their document
- Their cédula or passport number
- The exact purpose of the power
What to bring
Your Dominican identity document, cédula or passport, and the full details of your representative: their name exactly as it appears on their document and their cédula or passport number. Without that the act cannot be drafted.
It usually needs legalizing afterwards
A consular notarial act normally needs legalizing at the Foreign Ministry in Santo Domingo before it takes effect with the institution asking for it. Ask whoever demands the power whether they need it legalized, because that is an extra step and it happens on the island.

Authorization to collect a pension
This one is different and worth knowing: authorizing someone else to collect your Dominican pension has no cost. The beneficiary signs it in person, and you need the name and document number of whoever will collect, plus the name of the paying institution.
Authorizing a child's travel
Minors born in Dominican territory need authorization to leave the country with anyone other than a parent. Parents or the legal guardian sign it, and afterwards it has to be legalized at the Foreign Ministry and certified at Migration.
What it costs
Fees for notarial acts are not published on the Dominican consular websites: where the amount should be, several official pages leave the space blank. Ask the price when you book.
