Dominican Republic visa: who needs one and who does not

Dominican Republic Visa En
With residence or a multiple-entry visa from the United States, Schengen, Canada or the UK you need no visa to enter.

Most people searching for a Dominican visa from the United States do not need one. Before booking anything, check which of the three cases you are in.

Who does not need a visa

Decree 691-07, of 18 December 2007, lets you enter on your passport alone if you hold permanent residence or a valid multiple-entry visa from the United States, the Schengen area, Canada or the United Kingdom.

On top of that, nationals of countries with a visa-waiver agreement with the Dominican Republic need no visa for tourism. The United States is one of them.

Do you need a Dominican Republic visa: Tourist with a US passport; Tourist with residence or a multiple-entry visa; Residence, study, work or long-term business

The governing rule is Law 875 of 31 July 1978, and a decision takes five to ten working days.

Item Detail
Residence by investment 250 USD
Residence pension/income 200 USD
Business, single entry 150 USD
Business, multiple entry 200 USD
Turnaround 5-10 working days

The types and what they cost

The residence visa comes in four forms: by investment (250 dollars), by pension, by private income and by family reunification (200 dollars each).

The business visa comes in two: single entry (150 dollars) and multiple entry (200 dollars). The multiple one lasts a year and does not allow consecutive stays longer than two months.

Watch the residence visa

It lasts 60 days and works for a single entry. It is not residence itself: it is permission to enter and apply for it. Once in the country you report to the Directorate General of Migration to complete the process with whatever it requires.

The tourist card

Anyone entering as a tourist under Decree 691-07 needs a valid passport and a tourist card. Check how it works on your ticket: practice has shifted in recent years and airlines usually build it in.

And the e-Ticket, separately

Visa or no visa, the e-Ticket is mandatory for every passenger, and it is a different procedure done online and free of charge.

Before applying for a visa, check Decree 691-07: you may not need one.
